Three Truths to Combat Tiredness, Dismay and Trouble

Have you ever felt claustrophobic, either physically or emotionally? I’m sure you can remember a time as easily as I can. The world’s pressures on us can feel intense at times. David’s life showcases the importance of relying on God during such times and not giving way to the pressure in fear or despair. I know I have fallen prey to dismay or a troubled mind when I’ve stared a little too long at the task lists or the world’s state instead of at Him.

Thankfully we don't need to ever stay there! We have role models in Scripture to guide us through a way to freedom. This verse is nestled in David’s song of praise to the Lord when He had delivered David from his enemies. It is the perfect balm to boost a tired soul, encourage a dismayed heart and ease a troubled mind. How? It shows us three characteristics about God and showcases three truths we can rely on regarding His ability to care for us.

  1. He leads us to spacious places: Let’s all take a deep breath together. This one truth alone might be enough for someone reading this today to find relief and joy. God is the perfect leader. He never pushes us too fast or goes too slow. His plans for us reach far beyond our capacity to understand at the present time and hold more promise that we can grasp. Hope follows quickly on the heels of knowledge like this, friends!

  2. He delivers us: I’ve encountered a lie circulated quietly among Christian women especially that we need combat ferociously. It’s often unsaid, but there is an element of fear of fully trusting God’s will for us. Friends, God is a Rescuer. His nature is loving, compassionate and gentle. His will for us is the only pathway to peace and hope. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t believed this lie a time or two. Our ancestor Eve believed the lie too, so we aren’t alone here. But the Holy Spirit encourages us through Peter when he spoke against this in 1 Peter 3:6 “..do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.” Let’s remember this, ladies (and gents!) God’s plans for us are good. He will deliver us. We do have the ultimate victory, in Christ, in the end. This means we know the end of the book. So let's resolve to trust that any plot twist that seems terrifying or troubling is just another way God will be glorified in our lives.

  3. He takes pleasure in us: This truth makes me smile. The Crafter of the Oceans rejoices in the fact that you and I exist. This truth makes the enemy of our souls hate us, so he attacks us viciously in this area. But we cannot give into lies that we aren’t His beloved. Scripture sings of this truth endlessly. The best love story you’ve ever read or heard, movie or TV show you’ve watched looks like a cheesy pamphlet or badly filmed commercial compared to God’s love for you and I.

So whether you're joining in as we memorize this verse or not, let's spend a little time mulling over these truths, friends. God leads us to good places. God rescues us from our struggles. God delights in us! Oh what rich graces our God has planned for us, friends. Happy memorizing!
